CHAPTER 19

BRITTANY/XUL

I open my eyes once again to find myself somewhere else that I don’t recognize. Unfortunately, I don’t remember much after that little fit I threw earlier. I know that at some point DaR come into the room. I know it was him because his voice is so distinctive. I could tell he was arguing with someone, but I didn’t really care what he had to say, so I tuned him out. I was kinda drowning in my own self-pity at the time.

I hear voices, but they don’t seem familiar. “XuL!” I no more than say his name when he is in front of me. I take a deep breath, trying to calm my heartbeat down as I had started to panic.

“Hey, you have awoken. You fell asleep on me late last rising. So we, that’s Kira and I, decided that, while you were resting. I should go ahead and move you to the ship. I have a lot I need to talk to you about, but first of all, are you hungry?”

They must have given me some more meds after I fell asleep. Because I feel like I'm floating. “I'm not sure to be honest. I feel really fuzzy. Who were you talking to?”

“That’s Tordan. He is flying this beast right now so I can spend some time with you. I will introduce you as soon as he can set her on auto pilot. Tordan is like a second father to me. Father wouldn’t let me come on this mission alone. He insisted that Tordan come since he couldn’t leave Kira right now, and SoL is busy overseeing RaZ’s next space jump.”

“So, Kira isn’t here?”

“No, I'm sorry. It’s just me, you, and Tordan. I hope this doesn’t make you uncomfortable. There will be more of us as soon as we land, as we have hired guides to lead us to the pools. I know that we are practically strangers, Brittany, but I do hope you realize I will do anything to keep you safe.”

Somehow, even though it makes absolutely no sense, I believe that. “I think I have crawled around in your lap long enough now that we are no longer strangers. I'm sorry you have to babysit me once again. I'm sure you have better things to do than haul me all over the place. I will admit, I'm a little confused. Why are we on a ship? Am I the mission you just mentioned?” I watch a series of emotions roll across XuL’s face.

As he reaches for my hand, his black markings dance and swirl the moment he touches me. I watch him take a deep breath like he is facing a firing squad. Whatever he has to say, I'm not going to like it.

He whispers, “Here goes nothing. First of all, to make a long story short, we are three risings from my home planet, Zulas. It’s a large moon rotating around an inhabitable planet. I don’t know much about it as I haven’t returned to my mother’s planet since Father came for me.
